Housing represents one of the most essential needs for all people. Immigrants face additional challenges, complicated by language barriers that often prevent effective communication. Many immigrants are not in a position to own their own home when they first arrive, so renting an apartment or house becomes a necessity. Differing laws (many state-specific) and customs dramatically affect the ability to meet this most basic human requirement. These housing issues encompass:

ÉXITO EN EL NORTE equips newly immigrated renters (and potential homeowners) with vital information to help meet the challenges described above. Vivid portrayals of common situations illustrate the process of renting an apartment or house, from first walk-through to maintenance and maintaining cordial relationships with landlords and neighbors. Real-life interviews portray common housing situations and how to resolve landlord/tenant issues. The Housing video/DVD also details state-specific housing laws, exploring both rights and responsibilities. Topics covered include:

Tools
Many laws and organizations, both on the state and federal level, exist to protect renters and their rights. Specific resources are available in cases of housing discrimination due to race, color, language, family status or country of origin. Additionally, many non-profit and federal, as well as state and/or local agencies offer general housing assistance, sometimes in Spanish. Many of these state and local resources may be found listed on printed resource guides that accompany each copy of the Housing video/DVD.
